How to Sing

What is mixed Voice?

Hi there!

I will try to explain the difference betwen mixed and belt voice in my own words- might not sounds perfectly put together but here it goes.

Belt voice vibrates in the chest and really hits hard on the vocal chords. Generally speaking- very generally, in your lower range you might use this tone if you are gentle and if you have a voice that is blessed by God to last and endure pounding, you might be able to do a full tour with no issues. Or- you could end up like Adelle, God forbid cancelling your tour. Oye vey! No good.

Mixed voice is like getting a million dollars for free. It never hurts your voice though it does require a lot of great breathing focus at the beginning. So the way you get it is you sing a vowel (some vowels will be easy like ee or oo and some hard like maybe AH or Oh...depends) You sing it in Opera voice - dome shaped mouth, almost in a affected way.

Then you might try to sing it in a nasal voice to get in touch with vibrations in your face. Nasal vibrates in your nose so it's close to what we want but not quite cuz it's annoying sounding.

Then you go for that Opera Sound but vibrate in your face (you have to use your imagination with singing because we cant see the voice- sorry bout that- so you focus on vibrating in your upper teeth or your cheeks if you will and not so much your nose this time) You can pretend you are singing Broadway since Broadway singers have this mixed sound a lot.

That is the mixed voice. To add the cherry on top, get rid of the affected sound by shaping your mouth normally like you would when you talk or sing pop. YOu cold even add some black soul in there and vibrato.

So essentially, Mixed voice is Opera without the affected pronounciation and with a little white or black soul added and emotion. Always remember the emotion of the song.

Warning- when you first practice, certain vowels will stink! They will sound airy or weak. You could try singing the ones that are strong and then spill over into the hard one. Like ooh- Aah on one note.

Does this help? So the excersei has 3 steps on any one note or vowel or even sing a total song on one vowel. But you sing the phrase 1. In Opera 2. Nasal sounding 3. Mix voice or broadway or Opera without the snobby prononciation.

Shoot! I wish I made a video of this teaching because I think some of my other friends might have liked to hear it. Oh well. If you make a video explaining or trying this. Please send it to me and I'll post it.
